Gheos Worldguide Travel News Europe A solar eclipse will occur in Greenland, Iceland and Spain on 12 August. The eclipse will first be visible at sunrise in the northernmost part of Siberia. It will then be visible in northern Greenland around 17:18 in the afternoon. The eclipse can be seen in western Iceland around 17:45. At 19:30 it will be visible in northern Portugal and it will finally be visible in large parts of northern and eastern Spain around 20:30. In most of the rest of Europe, Canada and northwestern Africa, a partial eclipse will be visible. Learn more about:Europe Canada A fire that started on 7 August in the Canadian province of Britih Columbia has destroyed some 95 km² (37 sq mi) of forest around lake Okanagan. Some 20,000 people from the region west of the lake have been evacuated. The fire has destroyed numerous houses near the town of West-Kelowna. The region is known for its wine- and fruit production. Learn more about:Canada Spain A forest fire that started on 6 August in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia has burned some 8,000 ha (31 sq mi). The fire is difficult to control, as the terrain is inaccessible. In an other incident in the eastern town of Altea, fireworks that deviated into the public during a show on 8 August have injured 27 people. Most of the victims suffered from burns. Learn more about:Spain Guatemala On 3 August, the Fuego Volcano has erupted in Guatemala. 250 people have been evacuated. The volcano is located about 40 km (25 mi) southwest from the capital Guatemala City. The 4,000 m (13,000 ft) high volcano usually erupts almost continuously, but this eruption was larger. The last timethe Fuego Volcano erupted with this much force was in 2018, when hndreds were killed. Learn more about:Guatemala Africa Heat and drought have caused forest fires in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, it was reported in 29 July. In Morocco, temperatures have soared to 50°C (122°F). In Algeria, the fires have claimed 6 lives. In Tunisia, some 4,400 ha (17 sq mi) of nature areas have been burned. Learn more about:Africa Japan On 28 July, the southern Japanese island of Kyushu has been hit by an earthquake measuring 7.1, followed by a weaker one, measuring 3. Several fatalaties were reported and the quakes caused severe damage. Rescue efforts are ongoing. This week we will have a closer look at Ethiopia   Many people will remember Ethiopia as the African nation that brought images of starving children and hunger to our homes in the 1980's. Money was collected during events such as Live Aid, to send food to the impoverished country. In the 1990's a fierce war was fought with Eritrea, after that country became independent from Ethiopia and border disputes arose. At the end of that decade peace returned to the region and nowadays Ethiopia is an interesting place to visit. Ethiopia is the only African nation that has never been colonized and its people have a proud tradition of maintaining their independence, by force if necessary. The country has a rich and interesting Orthodox Christian heritage. The Ethiopians managed to maintain their faiths even though all the surrounding countries embraced Islam in the 7th century. Traveling in Ethiopia is not easy. The country does not have any tourist facilities and its infrastructure is very poor. Efforts to visit Ethiopia can be rewarding though. The country boasts fabulous landscapes, magnificent historical sites and a very friendly population. On top of all that, Ethiopia is a very cheap destination. You can visit Ethiopia all year round, with temperatures in the capital of Addis Abeba hovering around 20°C (68°F). During the months of June and July heavy rains make most roads un-navigable, so it is best to avoid staying in the country during that time. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions.
