This week we will have a closer look at New Zealand![]() New Zealand is an extremely beautiful country. It boasts glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, deep, clear lakes, hot geysers and boiling mud. There are also numerous forest reserves, long, deserted beaches and a variety of fauna. Animals such as the kiwi are endemic to its shores. The country is excellent for all kinds of outdoor activities. Tramping, or hiking, skiing, rafting and bungy-jumping are widely available. It is possible to swim with dolphins, gambol with newborn lambs, go out whale-watching or fish for trout in the country's clear streams. New Zealand's culture is a mix of European and Maori cultures. You can find places such as Te Awamutu, Whangamomona, or Paekakariki, but there are also Western names including Christchurch, Nelson and Auckland. The country's people are resourceful, helpful and overwhelmingly friendly. New Zealand is a relatively small country and travel by plane, bus, rail car or bicycle is affordable and efficient. There is a wide variety of cheap accommodation and the culinary promise of venison, fresh seafood, sublime ice cream and award-winning wines should more than whet the appetite. The warmer months are from November to April. The busiest period is during the school holidays from 20 December to the end of January. Ski resort towns are busier during the winter months. If you're traveling during peak periods, such as the Christmas season, it's best to book ahead. It is better to visit New Zealand either before or after this hectic period. The weather is still warm and there are not too many other travelers around. ![]() Click on the images to learn more about this interesting destination. A map of New Zealand will open full-screen. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions. But they said their dire conclusions may well come to pass if industrial nations do not curtail emissions of greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. |
