Gheos Worldguide Travel News Europe More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from their homes because of nature fires in France on 25 July. The largest fires are spreading around the city of Bordeaux in the southwest of the country. The fires follow other blazes that burned larges swaths of land earlier in July. In Spain, some 60,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, due to forest fires in the vicinity of Madrid and Ávila. Other fires burn in the eastern region of Valencia. This follows a period during which some 130,000 ha (502 sq mi) of nature has burned. More nature fires are burning in Italy and in Greece. Learn more about:Europe France A large fire has destroyed 800 ha (3.1 sq mi) of forest, just south of Paris. The fire was still spreading on 13 July. This follows a large fire near the city of Perpignan, which burnt some 1,650 ha (6.4 sq mi) of nature in the beginning of July. Learn more about:France China Hurricane Bavi has caused flooding and damage in China's eastern province of Zhejiang on 11 July. The hurricane made landfall in the city of Yuhuan and then proceeded towards the city of Wenzhou. The storm has uprooted hundreds of trees and caused several landslide. More heavy rain is expected for the coming days, so more flooding will occurr. Learn more about:China Spain A large forest fire in southern Spain has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, making it the deadliest nature fire in recent Spanish history. By 11 July, as much as 6,600 ha (25.48 sq mi) of forest and brush had burned. On 12 July, another brush fire burned near the resort city of Benidorm, but it was quickly extinguished. A Brush fire in the north of Spain destroyed 2,400 ha (9.27 sq mi) in early July. Learn more about:Spain Ghana On 30 June, it was reported that some 24 people have died in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire because of flooding and landslides. It has been raining in the region since Saturday and more rain is forecast. Most of the victims fell in the Ghanian capital of Accra. Learn more about:Ghana Venezuela A devastating earthquake hit Venezuela on 25 June. The quake hit with a force of 7.2, immediately followed by another one measuring 7.5. The quakes are amongst the strongest ones in the country's recent history and a massive death toll is feared. At least 45,000 people were reported as missing. The last time, Venezuela was hit by a strong earthquake, was in 2018, when a quake measured 7.3. From December to February most Brazilians take summer holidays themselves, so during that period accommodation can be tight and prices are generally higher. World Global warming could doom hundreds of land plants and animals to extinction over the next 50 years by marooning them in harsh, changed surroundings, scientists warn. A sweeping new analysis enlisting scientists from 14 laboratories around the globe found that more than one-third of 1103 native species they studied could vanish or plunge to near extinction by 2050 as climate change turns plains into deserts or alters forests. Among the already threatened species that could go extinct are Australia's Boyd's forest dragon, Europe's azure-winged magpie and Mexico's Jico deer mouse. The researchers concede there are many uncertainties in both climate forecasts and the computer models they used to forecast future extinctions.
